HP Insight Management Agents for Tru64 UNIX operate
on hardware devices hosted by AlphaServer systems.
They provide hardware instrumentation to enable fault,
performance, configuration and asset management.
The Management Agents use Industry Standard Simple
Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and the Hypertext
Transfer Protocol (HTTP). The web-enabled agents
render information dynamically in HTML so that it can
be viewed from a standard browser located anywhere
on the network. The agents also provide a level of
integration with SysMan and SysCheck, sharing the HTTP
service agent and the Home Page (figure 1).

The System Management Homepage,
supported on Tru64 UNIX v5.1A and above, is a
Web-based application that provides a consolidated
interface for single system management. The System
Management Homepage provides a common, easy to use
interface by aggregating the data from HP
web-based agents and management utilities (figure
2).

Figure 2 provides an architectural view of the Web-Enabled
Agents for Tru64 UNIX.

HTTP Server - Handles all the
communication outside the object being managed. It
proxies all external requests and replies, and handles
all security for the Web agents. The System Management
Homepage software on Tru64 UNIX v5.1A and above,
proxies to this HTTP server and handles all external
HTTP requests.

Data Rendering
- Creates an HTML page. When
it receives a request, it reads the corresponding template
page and creates a new HTML page. The data tags are
replaced with actual data or JavaScript objects. The
resulting page is then returned to the HTTP server.

Data Acquisition
- Services the data request
from the data rendering engine. It uses MIB.BIN to
translate Data names to Object Identifiers (OID) and
then uses the OIDs to retrieve SNMP MIB data.

The SNMP Management Agents perform
in-depth monitoring of devices by collecting and
measuring critical parameters. These parameters
indicate the current state of subsystems by counting
the occurrences of particular events (for example,
the number of read operations performed on a disk
drive) or by monitoring the state of a critical
function (for example, whether the cooling fan
is operating). The subsystems that the agents monitor
include Configuration, Mass Storage, Networking,
Utilization, and Recovery. Figure 4 below
is an example of the web display.

HP Insight Management Agents for Tru64 UNIX consist
of the following software components:

HTTP web server library (
libcpqhmmo.so
).
This is a shared library which provides HTTP
V1.0 services as well as the ISAPI protocol used
by the Hyper Media Managed Objects (HMMOs)

Insight Manager Web Agent (
insightd
).
This is the agent responsible for the data acquisition
and data rendering. It converts SNMP raw data
to formatted web pages.This daemon does not exist on CPQIM360 onwards on Tru64 UNIX v5.1A and higher, as it has been converted into a System Management Homepage webapp.

SNMP subagents (
cpq_mibs
). These
are the ESNMP subagents implementing the Compaq
Enterprise MIBs including cpqhost.mib, cpqsinfo.mib,
cpqstdeq.mib, cpqscsi.mib, cpqhlth.mib, cpqnic.mib,
and cpqide.mib.=

Threshold subagent (
cpqthresh_mib
).
This is a general purpose alarm and threshold
subagent, implementing Compaq's settable Threshold
MIB, cpqthrsh.mib.

SysMan HMMO (
sysman_hmmod
). This
management module is responsible for registering
SysMan with the management agents and rendering
the SysMan Home Page. This daemon does not exist on CPQIM360 onwards on Tru64 UNIX v5.1A and higher, as it has been converted into a System Management Homepage webapp.

Config HMMO (
config_hmmod
). This
management module is responsible for registering
SysCheck with the management agents and rendering
the Sys_Check report.This daemon does not exist on CPQIM360 onwards on Tru64 UNIX v5.1A and higher, as it has been converted into a System Management Homepage webapp.

GS Discovery HMMO (
gshmmod
).
This management module only runs on AlphaServer GS80/160/320
Series. Used to discover GS series platforms
on a single subnet of a LAN. Provides a consolidated
view of the discovered platforms along with any
active partitions running Tru64 UNIX or VMS.

Storage subagents (
cpqstor_mib
).
These are the SNMP subagents implementing the
Compaq Enterprise Storage MIBs including, cpqida.mib,
cpqfca.mib, and cpqstsys.mib.

Performance subagent (
pmgrd).
This
is the SNMP subagent implementing the Tru64 UNIX
Performance MIB, pm.mib. This version is an update
from the base OS version which now provided Disk
I/O rate, and integrated NFS Statistics.

SNMP Trap to EVM conversion utility (
snmpevmd
).
This agent monitors SNMP traps and posts corresponding
Tru64 UNIX Event Manager (EVM) events. The
user can customize this agent by specifying the
SNMP traps to be processed in a simple configuration
file. Custom EVM templates can also be
provided to describe the traps received.

The System Management Homepage software (
hpsmhd ) supported on Tru64 UNIX
v5.1A and above, is the master HTTP server
providing the consolidated home page and web
interface for all other HP web based software
installed on the system.
